Helper City Library Board Meeting January 23, 2025

Stacie called the meeting to order at 6:08 pm. In attendance were Ken Kotce, Olivia Dudding, Stacie Turpin, Taylor Powelson, John Serfustini and Diana Grant.

Stacie moved that the preceding minutes be approved. Ken seconded the motion and a vote approved the minutes.

Director’s Report – Diana announced that the next Book & a Movie will be The Wild Robot on Friday, February 28th at 6:00 pm in the Helper Auditorium. We have 10 books to give away to kids who will be attending the movie.

We have a new employee, Emma Crocco who is replacing Amber Carmichael. Amber felt there was too much to do as she has another job at the middle school. We still have not heard about the CLEF grant. There is a director’s meeting on Zoom the 29th so hopefully we will learn some information.

Diana passed out copies of the Collection Development Policy. This is our most extensive and intricate policy which needs to either be corrected, added to or approved as is. This will be done at our next meeting in March.

In other items, Taylor would like to have a Lego group for 7 -9 year old’s which would be for several weeks. It would be  in the 4:00 – 5:00 pm time range. There will be a google form for parents to fill out. We do need to get more Lego pieces and will probably use Friends of the Library funds for it. Taylor also mentioned our supply closet which could use a spring cleaning. We need to remove everything to see what we have and organize it better. Diana will ask Kevin, our building’s person, if there are any more shelves we could use.

There is going to be a public meeting January 30th from 5:30 to 7:00 about uses for the auditorium. Apparently, the asbestos mitigation company will also be there. Stacie and Diana are planning on being there to see what is being said about the future of the library.

Olivia, our poet laureate, will be posting poetry on the windows of the buildings on Main Street in April. We also talked about an email the library received about a Dutch artist who celebrates a poet every year on his birthday. He does a trek from the poet’s birth city to the city where they died. He has Helper Library on his sojourn scheduled for March 15th at 11:00 am. John Trudell is this year’s poet. Olivia said she would investigate the email further and see what we could do about it.

Stacie called for adjournment at 6:59 pm.
