Directors Report: Book and a Movie: After some discussion, we decided to show “The Witches” for our book and a movie, October 23rd, at 6:00pm. for a Halloween scary movie. We will also give away a book for each family that will be attending the movie. We will have the usual hot dogs, popcorn and bottled water. We also talked about getting a license to be legal in showing movies to the public. Swank.com is one of the companies that handle this.
STEM Toys, the state library has sent the library some great STEM toys for younger kids to introduce them to numbers and other early exposure to science, technology and engineering. We will put a notice out to our volunteer pool for someone to have a STEM playtime at the library. Stacie Turpin might be interested in this.
Bonnie Shiffler-Owen is still interested in having a poetry group in Helper. Olivia sent her an email to get the conversation going for this project.
Ruth wants to change the time for Story Time because of a conflict with the time of preschool. It will now be every Tuesday at 2:00pm., so we can get everyone that wants to come at a better time. Ruth motioned to change the time of Story Time, Olivia seconded and it was passed unanimously.
Ruth has been in touch with Scholastic Books about a program where the library can give kids free books to have for their own. Ryan Madsen at the Coyote’s Well Coffee Shop in Wellington has been doing a fund raiser for the library and we can use this money to buy the books. Maybe, a fun thing to do at Christmas?
Olivia talked about the board volunteering time for Helper’s Hogwarts. Ben and Mel Steele volunteer for this project which is well received by Helper. Next year, the board
could do more for this activity.
Olivia talked about the Light Parade and the library’s involvement in it this year. We will contact Ashley Vincent and see if she would like to participate. We have a better volunteer pool to draw from as it does take a lot of work to have a float in the parade. We could have a design contest and have a public vote on Facebook. Possibly give out books marks this year? We also should have an end of year awards program for all the people helping with our programs. We should also consider doing activities with the Helper Museum.
Jen talked about the Silent Book Club. She’s been super busy and suggested we only have one meeting a month for fall and winter. The times chosen for the next meetings will be 10/09, 11/13 and 12/11. The upper floor of Balanced Rock might be a consideration for a location. Also, Happiness Within is a possibility.
Taylor said one of our volunteer pool members, Bridgette, would like to start a book club at the library. She might also be a prospective board member. Wendy Wood is also considering joining the board. We have 3 spots open. Sally Mauro Elementary School is have a read-a thon in February that the library can help with. We should also contact the high school for student volunteers. We need more people for both the board and Friends of the Library.
Ruth motioned for the meeting to adjourn and Jen seconded it. It was passed unanimously at 7:42pm.
