Helper City Library Board Minutes – May 22, 2025

We did not have a quorum so we had an informal discussion of upcoming events. In attendance were Stacie Turpin, Taylor Powelson, Diana Grant and DG Fletcher joined us later.

Diana reported on happenings at the Library. She just completed a grant for new computers at the main desk. We are getting a new library program in September and the current computers are 7 years old so hopefully we will be getting new ones. ILL and CLEF grants are almost finished and, at this point, we will not be getting anymore funding per the current government administration.

Book and a Movie will be June 27th in the auditorium and will be Harriet the Spy. Books have been ordered to give out and we will be using Paramount streaming service as we cannot get the DVD. We will be setting up the projector and sound system on Thursday, the 26th and will ask Kevin to join us to help set up.

The library has had a person doing community service to help pull books that have not checked out in years to make more room on the shelves. Also, the less inventory we have when we transfer to the new library system, the better. We’ve also moved books around to leave the bottom shelves unused as it is really hard to see titles that low.

Summer Reading is being planned by library aide Emma Hermanson. She is doing a great job in organizing lesson plans and picking books and activities for the kids. We’ve had a great response and expect a lot of kids to attend this summer. It begins on Tuesday, June 3rd at 1:00 and continues through July 29th, 9 sessions. Several people have volunteered to help with the program.

We talked about a possible activity for teens at our last meeting at a nearby horse ranch but the owner is not ready, at this point, to begin a program. Maybe, next year we can pursue this further. We did talk about sending out a survey to parents of teens and tweens to see what activities they thought their kids would be interested in. We talked about doing “Junk Journals” as a possible after-school project on early-out Mondays.

The Library Board will host a booth at Saturday Vibes on August 9th. Taylor made all the arrangements for this. We will sell some of the books we have pulled from the shelves and issue new library cards. We will have a coloring contest for kids 3 – 8 yrs. and a design a book cover for kids 9 – teens. We will have prizes for the winners.

Our next meeting will be Wednesday, July 23rd at 7:00. We will discuss junk journals, vibes and our next book and a movie.
