Olivia called the meeting to order at 6:35pm. In attendance were Olivia Dudding, Ruth Lee, Miriam Gileadi, Jennifer Buttrick, Taylor Powelson, and Diana Grant.
Director’s Report: Book and a Movie was Friday, May 15th and we showed Stuart Little. There were 12 people in attendance and everyone enjoyed the movie. We had hot dogs, popcorn, chips and cookies. Diana suggested not having another book and a movie until September. There are a lot of activities going on and it will be better received after a little break.
Buddy Reading – Diana set up having an Americorps senior at the library for the summer to do “buddy reading” with elementary kids. This helps kids hone their reading skills over the summer and not fall behind. Mary is our reader and she spent the last school year at Sally Mauro doing the same program. We have 8 kids signed up and this will continue until the first week in August.
Summer Reading is off to a slower start than last year but there are 6 kids signed up so far. This is a requirement from the state library as part of recertification. It is a program of stories and activities under the title Unearth a Story. Diana will plan some stories from new books purchased for this program and plan some fun activities as well. This will be for the month of June and July and takes place in the auditorium.
Taylor has made an activity calendar for the month of June and will post it on the library’s Facebook page. She will continue to do this so everyone can see what is coming up for the library.
Silent Book Club – Jen will be having SBC meetings at the pool park for the month of June. Her summer dates are June 12 and 26. July 17 and 31 and August 14 and 28. These are all Fridays. She will do one flyer for the summer. She would like this posted on the library’s website. The time, for the summer, will be 7:00 pm. at various locations.
Friar Tucks has advertised to bring your library card to receive a stamp for your Summer Passport Booklet, which were passed out to kids on the last day of school. Carbon Corridor put this together to get kids out and doing things.
Music and Movement – Mir will have her program June 8 and 22, July 6 and 20 and August 3 at the Helper Main Street Park at 2:30. School starts August 20th. Mir will get together with Diana to purchase some kiddo instruments with CLEF money.
Mir also has been in touch with Marsha at the Avalon in regards to having snacks for kids at the library, or for events and programs with the Utah Food Bank. It was also suggested having a vending machine in the library. Ruth can continue with snacks for story time. Olivia thinks having snacks for kids at the library is a good thing. Harim Driggs is connected to USU Eastern eat healthy program and has done summer reading in the past. Taylor will contact her.
Olivia talked to Cole about volunteers for the library. There is an online form on Facebook for volunteers. 6 people have applied and Olivia will be sending a follow-up email. All volunteers will have to have a background check and there is no cost for that. Event planning and fund raising experience will be asked and also any interest in Friends of the Library. There will be a meeting June 8th at 6:30 and also on Zoom for interested volunteer applicants.
Diana will talk with Brian at the State Library about access to the library website. He designed the site and at this point, only Diana and Brian can add items to the site. Olivia and Taylor would also like to have access. They would also like a library board member application on the website.
We will have a meeting June 11th at 6:30 to go over board member applications. i.e. what can you bring to the library? Also, any questions for Cole about applications. There are certain things that you cannot ask an applicant. We could also ask if they would be interested in Friends of the Library instead of the board.
Diana will contact Brian at the state library in regards to Olivia and Taylor having access to the library’s web site. Right now, Diana has access to certain areas on the site and Brian takes care of the rest of the site.
First Friday – Pass out library card applications and put them in the book drop. It’s on June 5th from 5:00 – 8:00. There is also a car show June 19th and 20th. We could have a book and bake sale on Saturday.
The meeting was adjourned at 8:15pm.
