In attendance were Ashley Vincent, Olivia Dudding, Miriam Gileadi (prospective member), Ruth Lee (city council member), Jen Buttrick, Taylor Powelson and Diana Grant.
Book and a Movie and seed starters will be Friday, March 6th. Diana mentioned that an adult patron said she’s coming to the seed starter and staying for the movie cause it’s one of her favorites. Diana is concerned that more people will do the same and we need to ensure we have enough food. Taylor is going to RSVP the seed starters and see if we get a response and can gauge if we need to have more food. We could, in the future, have sponsors for snacks at the movie.
Jen reported that the 1st Silent Book Club had a small response. The next one is Friday, the 20th, at 6:00 pm. with a book exchange and hopefully more people will come to that. The time of day may make a difference. The first gathering was at 11:00 am. Miriam suggested doing a cam video to advertise which she can help with.
Board Organization and Structure – Olivia nominated Taylor as co-chair of the board which was approved by a vote from the members. Olivia also named two people in charge of programming: Jen for adults and Ashley for kids to cultivate forward progress and be community leaders. Olivia also wants to restart Friends of the Library which is a non-profit group. Ruth will check into the required paperwork for that. Olivia would also like to fill the board with all 9 members that we are allowed by the State Library. We do have a board training at our next schedule meeting, March 26th. Helper Engine supports businesses and groups in Helper with finances, grants and getting volunteers. City Hall is also involved getting new members as a background check is required. We are on the City Council agenda March 5th to vote on Miriam’s membership. Olivia would also like to speak to the council on the library and its board.
Olivia would like to amend the bylaws to monthly board meetings rather than every other month. We will also start a google calendar for board members. We will be going through the strategic plan to implement all the items suggested there. It was also stated that the library should be open on weekends. Goals – bring ideas to the March meeting along with names of 3 volunteers per idea that could possibly be friends of the library.
Ideas for future activities: Miriam would like to do music and movement for all ages and a puppet show for kids. Ashley would like to have a 4-day summer camp and Ruth talked about a hay ride and stories. We also need to have some fund raising goals.
The members voted to have Miriam as a member after the city council votes.
Emma, the library’s former employee, asked Ashley to help with the Flat Stanley project she started before she left. He should go to different places in Helper.
April is national poetry month.
The next silent book club dates will be: March 11 at 11:00 am., March 20 at 6:00 pm and March 25 at 11:00 am.
The meeting ended at 7:30.
