Helper Library Board Meeting – March 28, 2024

Stacie called the meeting to order at 6:20 pm. In attendance were Ken Kotce, Stacie Turpin, Taylor Powelson, Olivia Dudding, Brittany Pitcher and Diana Grant.

The minutes from the previous meeting were approved.

Director’s Report: A survey was posted on Facebook with 3 choices – Matilda, Paddington and BFG. There were 7 responses with Matilda having the most votes. So, we will have a Book and a Movie showing Matilda on April 19th at 6:00 pm. Paddington will be our next showing in June. We also decided to get a popcorn maker instead of using microwave popcorn.

The library has received an ARPA Grant from UEN to update our wi-fi equipment. It will be $6,000 + with Les Olson doing the ordering of equipment and installation.

Meeting With the Mayor: Stacie, Ken and Olivia met with Mayor Peterman at the library to go over the closing of the library during asbestos mitigation. The mayor was very interested in the library and wants to help as much as possible. A temporary place for the library was discussed with space for a children’s area to continue Story Time and a work space to check out books and perform other library functions. This closing probably will not be until winter 2025 or even spring so there is time to come up with plans. We need to make a list of what is important during the closure. A letter was written, by Olivia, to Mayor Peterman which will be an open and continuing document for everyone to keep track of ideas and progress, i.e. access to materials for library staff.

Working Board Meetings: We will make a list of suggestions for the new fiscal budget beginning July 1, 2024 – June 30, 2025. The #1 item will be rewiring of the electrical system and fire safety. We also need better utilization of our small space. Diana will contact Heidi, our state representative, to see if there’s an architect available for historical buildings. We also discussed an “after school program” grant to pay for more people to help run these various programs. They would probably need certification in first aid, CPR and a background check. We could also look into the possibility of having a school district bus drop kids off at the library. Taylor is also going to look into the Utah After School Network for more ideas. So, it was decided that the board needs to add work meetings to our regularly scheduled board meetings. The first one will be at 4:00 pm, before Book and a Movie at 6:00 pm. on the 19th. This meeting will cover budget items and possible grants.

Olivia, Helper’s Poet Laureate, will present works at Helper’s first First Friday, April 5th.

Stacie adjourned the meeting at 8:30 pm.
